The Private Bin series has been inspired by the McGuigan family tradition to always share a special family wine with their guest. The soft and velvety Merlot combined with the more powerful Cabernet Sauvignon grapes produces a luscious red wine. Deep crimson in colour with aromas of blackcurrant, mint, spiced fruit, cinnamon and vanilla flavours.

Typical features of the 4 varieties in the blend - red current from Cabernet Sauvignon, blackberry from Merlot, plums and spices from Malbec and black jubes and musk from Petit Verdot. A firm structure of acid and tannin, very drinkable.

This is a wine of great intensity. It has distinctive blackcurrant and cassis fruit flavours. Subtle oak characters of cedar cigar box and spice are also evident. First made in 1982, Awatea continues to represent the best of the classic Hawke's Bay Cabernets/Merlot blend. Floral aromas with intense blackberry, currant and dark plum flavours lead to a rich, supple palate with a sustained finish. Awatea will continue to evolve in bottle for ten years from harvest.

This densely coloured wine shows lovely aromatics with layers of red and black plum, mingling with cassis, smoky roast coffee bean, dried thyme and complex cedary spice nuances. The palate is soft yet concentrated, with wonderfully fine-grained tannins and integrated oak. While approachable in its youth, this wine will benefit and gain additional complexity from careful cellaring over the next 10-15 years.
